Dietary Webinar

The Pennsylvania Department of Education, Division of Food and Nutrition, collaborated with the Pennsylvania Department of Health, Division of School Health, to provide a Special Dietary Needs Webinar Training for School Nurses and School Food Service Professionals.

The number of students being diagnosed with special dietary needs and food allergies increases each year. It is important that school nurses and food service directors understand the laws, regulations, and their respective responsibilities regarding students with special dietary needs. Although, the webinar targets school nurses and school food service professionals, other school staff involved with serving students with special dietary needs may want to view the webinar.

Act 48 credits may be requested for viewing the recorded webinar only if you view from the Pennsylvania Department of Health's Learning Management System website at www.paprepared.net.

You will need to register for an account, but this is free. Note: Once you register, it takes 1 to 3 days for your username and password to be emailed to you.

  1. Answer "no" to the first question.
  2. Next, choose "PA School Personnel." You will need your Professional Personnel ID (you can retrieve it on PDE's website).
  3. This will give you access to all of the courses on the School Track.  Click on your "Learn: tab, then "Act 48". The courses are listed in the order that they are posted; the Special Dietary Needs course is at the very bottom of the list.

If you are not interested in receiving Act 48 credits, you may view the recorded webinar at http://vclass.cciu.org/play_recording.html?recordingId=1248900666754_1273665935155

During this webinar participants will learn about:

  • Federal laws regarding accommodating students with special dietary needs
  • The distinctions between accommodating students with disabling and non-disabling special dietary needs
  • Their respective responsibilities in accommodating students with special dietary needs
  • How school nurses and school food service staff can coordinate collection of and share information while serving students with special dietary needs
  • The new federal regulations regarding fluid milk substitution

Project PA, a collaboration between Penn State University and the Pennsylvania Department of Education, Division of Food and Nutrition, is working on developing a special dietary needs module that will be included in the School Nutrition Toolbox in the near future.

If you have difficulty accessing the webinar, please contact Diane Thomson at CCIU, directly at 484-237-5017 or dianet@cciu.org
